Electrical work is specialist work. There are different types of licence s available in nsw depending on whether you want to contract with another party or supervise work. A contractor licence allows you to contract and advertise to do work. You can only do the types of work described on your licence card. Contractor licences can be issued to individuals and to companies and partnerships. From 1 july 2020, you can apply for a 1, 3 or 5 year contractor licence. A qualified supervisor certificate allows you to supervise and do the work described on your certificate. Qualified supervisor certificates are only issued to individuals.

A person must not carry on or offer to carry on or hold out that the person carries on or is willing to carry on any class of electrical contracting that, under the regulations, is a prescribed class of electrical contracting unless the person is registered under the electricity safety act 1998 as an electrical contractor in respect of electrical contracting of that class and holds the prescribed insurance. The prescribed insurance is insurance against public liability for personal injury or damage to property in conjunction with the electrical contracting work of the registered electrical contractor with a minimum cover of $5,000,000.

To be eligible for this licence, the company or partnership must: employ a person that holds a qualified supervisor certificate or an endorsed contractor licence (q) be registered with asic. For those electrical contractors wishing to utilise a paper form to fill out prior to submitting their ewr via the ep portal, you may download and print the paper document called template for use by electrical contractors to record data required for ewr submission.

Licensing/registration applications can be lodged at the territory business centre (tbc) in darwin, katherine, tennant creek or alice springs. Tbc staff will accept your form and payment and take photographs if required. If you wish to speak to a licensing officer please call the number given on the application form. A certificate must be given as soon as possible after you or your employees have tested or completed an electrical installation. A 'certificate of testing and safety' or a 'certificate of testing and compliance' must state the following: the name and address of the person for whom the work was performed the details of the electrical equipment or electrical installation tested the day the electrical equipment or installation was tested the electrical contractor licence number under which the electrical equipment or installation was tested a suitable certification statement.
